for String Orchestra
The province of Manitoba features a sweeping, majestic prairie landscape. This composition opens with a corresponding rich and grandiose musical gesture, then proceeds to an intriguing treatment of the dancing fiddle tunes (Backwoods Men and Red River Jig) that capture the energy and undaunted spirit of the Métis people who made this province their home. This piece was commissioned by the University of Toronto Faculty of Music in honour of Dr. Patricia Shand. Premiered May 16, 2011 by the North Toronto Collegiate Strings (Deborah Pady, director).
